I love animals! Cats, dogs, whatever.  I love National Geographic and watching documentaries about animals.  I know I should have been a veterinarian or something but my hands are way too shaky to achieve that. 😦

These are my latest addictions:

Ripley’s Kittens!

This is a live cam of a stray cat mommy and her kittens.

I figure there’s gotta be a live cam like this for puppies, right?  I found one!

I know I’ve been MIA but I’ve been feeling like this:

We came back from Montreal almost 2 weeks ago and since then I’ve been feeling really icky.  I was luckier than most though.  Poor CB was puking all the way up to Montreal in the car.  We had to stop 3 times on the highway just to change his clothes because he was literally covered in puke.  😦 Once we got up there, he managed to infect everyone with some form of the stomach flu.  I was lucky though.  I just felt some queasiness and body aches but that’s about it.  No puking, no diarrhea.  That’s ok.  The stomach flu is what I dread most.  I rather have what I have than the stomach flu.

So gory details aside – Christmas was tough this year since everyone was feeling under the weather.  We tried to make the best of it and still got to enjoy ourselves by going out to eat, visiting with friends and going snow tubing. 🙂

And now I have a really bad cough, have body aches and when I cough, I sound like a pig going to slaughter.  I know, not very attractive.  Ah well.  I think I sound a lot worse than I actually feel.  Miraculously, I actually feel better but I know I don’t sound it.

Every time we go back to Montreal, we try to hit one of the nicer restaurants since we have no time to do it back in the States and we have free babysitters.  Hee hee. Over the summer, we went to Joe Beef and that has got to be my most favorite restaurant ever.  I’d like to go back in the near future.  You can see my past review of Joe Beef over HERE.

This time we went to Au Pied De Cochon.  I’ve been wanting to try this place out for the longest time ever since seeing it on the Food Network. I think Anthony Bourdain also went here on one of his shows so I needed to try this!  On top of that, it’s gotten stellar reviews on Yelp.  I was so looking forward to this!  We made our reservation months in advance.  You couldn’t make it online, you had to call it in.  Miraculously, we had a reservation at a decent hour, unlike Joe Beef, where our dinner reservation was at 9:30pm!  Unfortunately, our friends couldn’t make it due to that dratted stomach flu that was spreading like wildfire so it was just Meanie and me.  It’s rare that we can get some time alone at a nice restaurant these days!

On the day of our reservation, there was a huge snowstorm but we managed to get there anyway.  There was still a line of people waiting to get seated despite the snowstorm.  We were seated shortly and I took a look around the restaurant.  It was nothing fancy.  The tables were really close together so you can peer at what the other patrons were eating.  It honestly reminded me of the tables at Katz delicatessen in NYC.  Ok, the tables were of a better quality than Katz’s but it was pretty damn close to the other people!  We were seated at the window so Meanie was looking out towards the street and I was looking into the restaurant. During our dinner, Meanie exclaimed, “OMG!” and I turned around and there were apartments across the street.  Apparently the guy who lived right across from the restaurant and on the top floor decided to parade around in his tidy whiteys and nothing else so everyone in the restaurant could see.  LOL.  I didn’t want to take a picture of that so we didn’t.  Pwahaha.  I wonder how often he does that.

We each got the Pied De Cochon beer which was light and tasty.
I stopped drinking this really soon because it was really filling me up.
So Meanie basically chugged down 2 mugs of this.

For appetizer, we ordered the Foie Gras Poutine and a Crispy Salad, hoping to balance out the heaviness and greasiness of the Foie Gras Poutine.  Unfortunately, the Crispy Salad only consisted of some vegetable leaves and the rest was fried pork on top of the salad.  It didn’t do much of to balance the heaviness of the poutine.

Foie Gras Poutine – Fries fried in duck fat, smother in gravy with pieces of fried foie gras on top and cheese curds.
The first bites were like bites of heaven and then soon after, it started to get really heavy.

Meanie took a few bites and then stopped because he said it was too heavy for him. Meanie underwent surgery earlier last year to remove his gall bladder so he can’t eat really heavy and greasy foods anymore.  So I had to eat it all or let it all go to waste.  I tried to eat it all but by the end, I wanted to keel over from clogged arteries and a heart attack.  It was delish at first but soon after, it got really gross.  The salad didn’t help much either. 😦  The portion doesn’t look very big but it was way too much for only 2 people. I think it would have been better shared if we had at least 4 people.  There were 4 pieces of foie gras on top of the duck fat-laden smother-with-gravy fries.

Crispy PDC Salad
Some greens covered in fried pieces of pork
Pretty heavy for a salad!

PDC5Meanie’s entree – Duck Magret in Mushroom Sauce
I think he really liked it because he snarfed it up in a matter of minutes.
He mentioned he didn’t really like the duck smother in a sauce though.
It took away from the flavor of the duck so it was a little overwhelming.
The potatoes were a bit under cooked so he didn’t finish them.

I really didn’t know what to get so I got the Pied de Cochon, which is basically a pig’s foot.
This is no ordinary pig’s foot though.  This has got to be a ginormous pig! I ate like 2 toes and had to wrap the rest up. It was just too huge.  The meat was very tender and it was very gelatinous from the fatty skin but it was a little too much to eat all at one time.  Plus, I was uberly stuffed from trying to eat the Foie Gras Poutine all by myself!

The menu for the restaurant is pretty limited.  I think the dish to get here is the Beef Ribs.  I saw many people with this. It was basically a large cut of a Rib Eye with bone in it, I think.  But it looked delicious.  I’m not sure if I’ll be here again but if I do, I’d go for that.

We took the Sugar Pie for 2 out for dessert and it literally looked like a Sugar Pie for 10. LOL.  I didn’t take any pictures of this because it was literally just a sugar pie in a tin so nothing special. The taste, however, was excellent.  I think they serve Sugar Pie warm at the restaurant and I’m sure with a pretty presentation.  I think it was probably the best part of the whole meal.

We were a bit disappointed by the meal.  I don’t know if it’s because maybe we ordered the wrong items or what.  We were expecting an excellent meal, like we had at Joe Beef.  We felt pretty disgusting after the meal. It was just too heavy and greasy for our taste.  I read all the excellent reviews online for this place and I’m baffled.  I’d like to chalk this up as to maybe ordering the wrong items but I doubt we’d be back here again.

Here’s the menu for Au Pied De Cochon – CLICK.

Oh well.  So much for that.

Influenster – Holiday Voxbox

Woohoo, my very first Voxbox since I joined Influenster this past summer.  I had received the Palmolive box but it wasn’t an official VoxBox so I’m counting the Holiday VoxBox as my very first one!  I filled out a survey one day and then they said I was getting a Holiday VoxBox!  This is good because it makes me try out all the stuff as early as possible.  I don’t know if you have noticed but it takes me a while to finally try something.  I like to take my time, which could be a bad thing.  I’m a big time procrastinator.   Here it is:

I’m comparing the size of the boxes. The Loot Crate is on the left and the Voxbox is on the right side.

Oh wow, I didn’t know they were based in NYC!
No wonder the box came really soon. It actually arrived on Saturday, the day I left for Montreal.
I had it shipped to my parents’ house.

Packing list with descriptions and price

1.  Quaker – Real Medleys Summer Berry Oatmeal – I used to hate oatmeal but now I love it. I think I used to hate it because my parents would make it for me when I was young but I wouldn’t eat it right away. By the time I’ve gotten the bravery to try this bland mess, it was congealed, cold and tasteless.  I love McDonald’s Fruit and Maple Oatmeal but I know it has to have a bunch of bad crap in it in order for it to taste good.  I also love the Quaker instant oatmeal packets, too.  I was very eager to try this.  I brought it for breakfast to work yesterday.  The instructions are very easy.  You can either add boiling water in it and let it sit a minute, a lot like instant noodles.  Or you can put cold water in it and then nuke it for like 45 seconds.  I took the first method and this is what it looked like:

It looks a little too liquidy there so I let it sit a bit more till it got really thick.  I think I would have liked the other varieties better.  I usually love berries but these were berries were really sour.  I noticed on the bottom, it was a little sweeter so maybe I just hadn’t stirred well enough.  The other varieties are:  Apple Walnut Oatmeal, Cherry Pistachio Oatmeal and Peach and Almond Oatmeal. Those sound fantastic!  Wasn’t too fond of the Summer Berry one but I will gladly try the other flavors.  This costs about $1.79 per cup.  I was also really full, too, and I couldn’t finish the whole cup!

2.  This is like the 3rd or 4th packet of EBoost I’ve received so far from other subscription boxes, like Conscious Box or Cravebox.  I figured it was similar to Emergen-C or something like that.  GlitteredScrubs had told me this tasted disgusting so I was even more scared to try it but I’m trying  😦  I think Emergen-C tastes awesome compared to this vile crap.  Ugh!  I’m not even sure if it’s boosting my mood, focus and immunity, since I’m already sick.  The most vile thing I have ever tasted was Buckley’s cough syrup even though it worked.  I think Eboost is up there too.  Ugh! And look!  This is what happens when you mix it with water!

I know it’s pink lemonade flavor but this is a little disturbing. LOL
This goes for $28 for a box of 20 packets; $39 for a box of 30…*shudder*
I think my stomach is protesting against this. I can’t force myself to drink this anymore…bleghhh

3.  Goody Quikstyle brushes.  This is a paddle brush with these absorbent microfiber bristles in between that are supposed to help dry your hair quicker.  They say it’s like a towel and brush in one.  This is kinda cool.  I’ve been using this since the beginning of the week.  It actually does seem to dry my hair a bit.  Some days I go without blow drying my hair because my hair seems to have dried a little bit more quickly than usual.  Although these days I’ve been blow drying because I have a cold…but I really do think this works!

quikstyle_howto (1)

This brush is $11.99.  I’m really loving this!

4.  Kiss Nail Dress.  This is so cute!!  I don’t really go for manicures since I am the ultimate klutz and tend to chip the polish off immediately but I usually go and get pedicures when the weather is warmer.  Plus, I don’t think I can really pull off cheetah print nails. I could, maybe a decade ago, with my cheetah print leather clubbing pants but not now.  No way. LOL.  That Babydot has long since grown up.  I think I’ll try this on my toe nails one of these days.  Maybe this weekend.  I’ve never applied anything to my own nails since I’m cursed with shaky hands so I don’t know how well these will turn out.  If these turn out great, I will definitely use more of these.  This costs $6.99.

5.  NYC New York Color Liquid Lipshine$2.49 – I’ve seen this brand before but I’ve never tried it.  I will, soon, though. I love lip gloss and lip balm.  They are my weakness.  I’m not a huge fan of this color though but they have a wide variety of colors available.

6.  Sole Society – $25 off your first purchase! – I’ve known about Sole Society for a while now but I’ve cancelled my membership.  Plus, all I wear these days are sneakers or fluffy imitation Uggs boots.  Heh.  Anyone interested in this?  Just email me or leave a comment and I’ll give it to you.  First come, first serve!

I did not get one of those face masks in my Voxbox but I think I got one in one of my other boxes.  Haven’t tried it surprise there.  =X

This was a great experience.  Much thanks to Influenster for giving me such a great opportunity to try out these new items.  I’m totally looking forward for more VoxBoxes if I’m lucky enough to qualify for more! 🙂

I have 2 more invites available to join Influenster. Anyone interested?  Just let me know!

Loot Crate Review – December 2012 box

I am so behind on reviews.  I even missed out on some of them. Arrgh.  So many things to do, so little time.  We came back from vacation in Montreal and it was a nice break, overall.  More on that later.

Loot Crate is another monthly box subscription and it is solely for gamers and geeks.  Hee hee.  I was very curious about this box and we had purchased it for one of our dear friends for part of his Christmas present.  He loved it! I didn’t take any pictures of the November box because I wanted to keep it as a surprise but you can see on the website what the last boxes were.  The Master Chief shirt was a hit!  Here is the description from the website:

Loot Crate delivers epic geek and gamer swag monthly. The Loot Crate team hand picks 6-8 new items every month. It’s like GETTING A COMIC CON SWAG BAG IN THE MAIL!

There are 3 different subscriptions – monthly, 3 months and 6 months.  I got the monthly box and after I got the November box, I promptly canceled my subscription.  They were quick to respond and that was that. Or so I thought.

It’s pretty nifty box. I think if I were just a big younger and still in the gaming rage, I’d like the box a bit more.

So I’ve come to that day.  I’ve retired from FPS (First Person Shooter, like Halo 1, 2, 3 & 4) games.  I just find that my blood pressure and stress levels go up when I play.  Meanie says it gives him stress relief but I beg to differ because he’s always screaming at the TV at the other online players.  LOL.  I still love RPG’s (Role Playing Games, like Final Fantasy) but they are so time consuming and I don’t have that kind of time anymore, especially with little munchkins.  And I can play Mario Kart anytime, hee hee.  The bad thing is that I don’t really have time to play till late evening after the kids have gone to bed and by that time, I want to do a bunch of things like catch up on TV shows, read a book, play games, when I should really be sleeping!

So one day I checked the mail and found another Loot Crate in my mailbox!  I could have sworn I cancelled this subscription.  I did! I checked all of my credit card statements and nope, I haven’t been charged.  I think they forgot that I cancelled.  Would it be bad if I kept it?  I did open it and was pretty impressed with the box.  It also contained a membership card in our dear friend’s name.  Apparently having this card would give him some benefits but I don’t really know what.  Hee hee.  This is fairly a new subscription so I’m sure more details will come soon.  What’s also cool about this subscription is that every month, they will pick someone’s name to win an ultimate package.  It’s like winning the lotto!

I took pictures of this box:

Loot Crate 1

It’s a pretty small box but it’s jam packed with goodies.

Loot 2

Loot 3

Loot 4

The whole box!

Doh.  I thought I took more pictures of this and of the packing list but I don’t think I had.  I opened this box when I just returned from Montreal while super tired and suffering from feverish body aches.  Sorry.  From what I can gather from the picture, there is a Domo Superman stuffy! So cute!  A Honey Badger stuffy (LOL), a bottle opener/key chain, a Gamer/Geek bracelet, an Atari Joystick with candy in it and a bunch of stickers.

This is a great box for the gamer geek in your life or yourself!  🙂

2012 in review

Happy New Year!

This is cool. I had no idea WordPress gives you a report at the end of the year.  I started to really blog again around October 2012 so this is pretty promising. Here’s to 2013!

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 4,700 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 8 years to get that many views.
